Ipoh Holiday Home

Design & Reno Build, Interior Styling; Landed home; 2018

This is the holiday home of Caroline Chin Geyler, the woman behind Arete Culture. Located in her hometown of Ipoh, Caroline shares this home with her husband, Eric, who runs our bespoke furniture and outdoor living collections. Caroline’s mum, helper, and 11 dogs also live onsite.

Family is important to Caroline and Eric, so this outdoor area was conceptualised for larger parties. The deck and pool were developed from scratch.

Design & reno build scope

  • The outdoor entertainment area was the first space that Caroline and Eric worked on in this new build. To pay homage to black-and-white homes, which Caroline loves, the design incorporated false beams, which were painted black.

  • They built a bar counter for easy hosting. The bar, coupled with the pool, are the anchor points of the outdoor space.

  • The pool was added for entertainment — an integral feature of this tropical holiday home.

Notes from Caroline

  • To emulate the feel of a breezy beach resort, the outdoors features a classic black-and-white palette with organic elements like rattan and linen.

  • Statement pendant lamps were chosen to draw the eye upwards, emphasising both the height of the space and understated grandeur of the entertainment area.

  • We also created different pockets of seating, since we usually entertain larger parties. This allows guests to easily break off into smaller groups for easy conversation.
